Linking European professionals concerned with

alcohol and pregnancy

Project for a European Integrated Communication Campaign to Increase Awareness of and Prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Alcohol consumption during every stage of pregnancy can seriously affect the health of the foetus and the unborn child. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is the leading known cause of birth defects and developmental disorders in Europe.

The European Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Alliance (EUFASD) and the European Alcohol Policy Alliance (Eurocare) in collaboration with the Local Health Authority of Treviso, Italy, propose to launch an awareness campaign on alcohol and pregnancy in 2014, coordinated at the European level. This initiative involves numerous institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and associations in many European countries belonging to the WHO European Region, with the aim of sharing objectives, materials and resources to develop an integrated communication campaign. This proposal of a European coordinated and systematic action will be supported by sponsors and partners to develop a campaign of quality, supported by an efficient evaluation system.

The goals of the project are

  • To raise awareness of the dangers of drinking during pregnancy among child-bearing aged women and in the general population.
  • To spread accurate, research-based information on the risks of using alcohol during pregnancy.
  • To solicit the participation of the institutions and private organizations on the FASD issue.

The primary target group is women of child-bearing age and their partners, living in the European Region (as defined by the World Health Organization).

The project uses theoretical models of social marketing applied to health promotion. The project will use traditional and unconventional communication tools (viral, ambient, guerilla marketing, etc.) including social media. Fundraising will be carried out centrally by the core promoters of the project.
