Alcohol worst of all drugs that affect fetal health The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) set off a firestorm of controversy this month when they suggested that women stop drinking alcohol if they are trying to get pregnant, or could get pregnant. Some people took this advice as the CDC prioritizing hypothetical, yet-to-be-conceived children over real women, which has brought up a number of issues from female autonomy to access to birth control—but how clear is the science about what causes fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and related fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). GIFFORD-JONES: FASD deserves as much attention as DWI The figures are appalling. In the U.S. every year 40,000 children are born suffering with fetal alcoholic syndrome disease (FASD). In Canada, there are more than 300,000 children with this disease. The lifetime cost for each child is $5 million. So in Canada, the cost to taxpayers of caring for those with FASD is $600 billion, the size of the national debt. In the U.S., the figure is $6 trillion. Pawtucket Times

FASD: moving toward sustainable assessment and support services in Ontario It is important to understand that FASD is in fact, brain damage. These disorders and their variations are complicated and often misunderstood. This often results in distressing outcomes, such as failed school experiences, trouble with the law, strained relationships, and home and placement breakdowns.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in Adults: Ethical and Legal Perspectives - Why People with FASD Fall for Manipulative Ploys: Ethical Limits of Interrogators' Use of Lies People with FASD are easily manipulated by others, and such social vulnerability is a major reason why they are so likely to get into serious legal and other forms of difficulty.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in Adults: Ethical and Legal Perspectives - Oral Language and Communication Factors to Consider When Supporting People with FASD Involved with the Legal System Difficulties with oral language are always present for those with FASD. However, it is not always easy to appreciate where language skills are involved, as other areas such as cognition, behaviour, social skills and emotional regulation frequently involve communication skills, and they can be hard to separate. At this level, skills are complex and interactive.
